PHOTOS: Obamas buy house they were renting in DC

The room may not be as large as Sasha's double-room suite, but, as Michelle explained, it's not going to be used all that much since Malia isaway at Harvard. Your dad might just convert it into a study while you're at school. However, the Hawaiian-born politician has also lived in some more compact properties in his time – not least his student apartment while studying at Columbia University in New York City. Though smaller than the Obamas’ former abode, the house is still a lavish residence in a desirable neighborhood in the nation’s capital. It was built in 1928, renovated in 2012, and contains nine bedrooms, according to its listing on RedFin. The sale price makes it the second-most-expensive home in the Washington, DC, neighborhood of Kalorama, after Jeff Bezos’ 2016 purchase.

Although there's no telling just how the house has changed since the Obamas sent in their decorating teamin 2017, there wasn't a whole lot that needed to be changed. As the 2014 listing showed, the home was fully updated and move-in ready. The kitchen was modernized with stunning countertops and great appliances. The bathrooms, too, featured marble tiling and countertops.

A less formal sitting room in the home had a full wall of windows and French doors leading out to the backyard. While the less formal room also had the conversational seating and fireplace, a TV sat above the mantle in place of a large piece of art. So, if you're wondering where the former president and first lady binge-watch all their shows, it might just be in this room.

The photos below are from 2014 and may not reflect how the Obamas have chosen to decorate their new home. After eight years in the White House, the Obamas are moving to a new house in the Washington D.C. As it turns out, the Obama family actually lives even closer to First Daughter Ivanka Trump and her husband, President Trump's senior advisor Jared Kushner. According to The Washington Post, it's only about a three-minute walk between the two residences.

But in January, that's what President Obama and his family, Michelle, Malia and Sasha, are going to have to do. Two of the home's eight other bedrooms will go to the Obamas' daughters, Sasha and Malia. Still in high school, Sasha has at least two more years under her parents' roof. There are numerous spaces for the family to kick back and relax, including a formal living room ...

When speaking to Oprah Winfrey in 2018, Michelle revealed what it was like to be home alone for one of the first times in some eight years. Michelle then brought her toast outside, where she sat on the stoop overlooking her backyard alongside her dogs. "And it's that quiet moment of me settling into this new life," she poetically stated.Ah. From the 2014 photos of the exterior of the home, it has all the markings of a classic Tudor, with its white-washed brick facade and steeply pitched roof, which appears to be slate. The family's house also sits up from the street, making it look even more stately.

As House Beautiful reported, Michelle told Oprah Winfrey that it's "a couple miles away from the White House." In reality, it's only about 8 miles away, though with D.C. Traffic it could take over 20 minutes to end up at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Unlike many former presidents, Obama says they plan on staying in Washington, D.C. — at least until Sasha finishes her education at Sidwell Friends School.

The 9-bedroom mansion with 8.5 baths may not have the same notoriety as the family's current abode, but it still boasts plenty of suburban charm and even a few historical touches . A gated courtyard should suffice to hold multiple secret service vehicles, which will be needed once the president leaves office. The Obamas most likely haven’t spent much time in the home — they have been photographed traveling the world since Barack Obama left office in January. The Obamas have purchased the 8,200-square-foot home they’ve been living in since moving out of the White House, The Washington Post reported. There is a stunning galleried living space with windows on three sides in the new Obama house, too.

Meanwhile, the couple's 16-year-old daughter, Sasha, "actually killed in this house," Obama told DeGeneres. "She has this two-room suite—it’s all decked out. She’s got a living room area and bedroom, and he designed it. So he’s really hating on her." As for their older daughter, who started college at Harvard last fall? "Malia's got a room up in the attic somewhere," the former first lady said.

Could that be where Barack Obama keeps all of his favorite books? Although there's not a whole lot of natural light, as is pretty much standard for all basements, the large space can still manage to be both inviting and cozy. A wall of windows lets in plenty of natural light, but, even if it didn't, recessed lighting and a brass ceiling fixture would keep the room well-lit, as seen in pictures for the home's 2014 listing. The Obamas may have kept the neutral bluish gray walls and crown molding that exude elegance, as well as the thick draperies that provide privacy and block out any unwanted morning light. Although the room isn't extravagantly large, statement furniture can still fit comfortably. While no closet can be spotted in the 2014 real estate listing photo, Michelle's dressing room is likely a short walk from the master.

Yes, that's right, the Obamas have two kitchens, as seen in the home's 2014 listing. And the one in the basement looks as stunning as the one upstairs. Much like the main kitchen, this secondary kitchen — at least at one point — featured marble countertops and stainless steel appliances. The room can also be used for laundry as a washer and dryer can be seen across from the refrigerator and range in listing photos. If Michelle's mom still lives with the family as she did when Barack was president, this walk-out basement would be a perfect in-law suite. "Sasha actually killed in this house," the former first lady told Degeneres.

The price was dropped twice this summer, first to $16.25 million in June, then to $14.85 million in July. The expansive 6,892-square-foot house sits on nearly 30 secluded acres fronting the Edgartown Great Pond between Slough Cove and Turkeyland Cove, with views of the Atlantic ocean. This is where the former president and first lady settled with their family after leaving the White House. After eight years at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., the Obamas are moving to a new residence not too far from the White House.

The Obamas are moving out of the White House and moving to the tony Kalorama neighborhood of D.C. The family plans to lease a nine-bedroom, 8,200-square-foot mansion, and calling it gorgeous would be doing the property and house a disservice. The mansion features nine bedrooms and nine baths and was built in 1928. The Ghosts of DC website says it was first listed at $50,000 back in the day; the last sale went to ex-White House Press Secretary Joe Lockhart, who still owns the property, for $5.3 million. Former president and first lady Barack and Michelle Obama opted to stay in Washington D.C. At least until their youngest daughter, Sasha, finishes high school.
